Nantahala is an indie folk outfit featuring top-shelf songcraft and luxurious harmonies that hit all the right notes for lovers of Americana, modern folk and classic country. Founded by songwriter Mary Johnson Rockers and vocalist and best bud Miriam Chicurel-Bayard, who have been performing original songs together for more than 20 years, they can claim 4 albums and accolades from some of North Carolina's favorite music venues and festivals. Further notches on their belts are the repeat invitations from radio programs across the Southeast (WUNC's The State of Things, WDVX's Blue Plate Special) and collaborations with notable Triangle talent (NC Music Love Army with Caitlyn Cary, producers James Wallace and FJ Ventre).
Their music is borne of an unsinkable friendship and a passion for using their voices for good. Mary and Miriam were teenagers when they formed a bond and launched a musical journey on the Nantahala River bordering their two home states. Starting out with solo performances, iterations of the group include Americana favorite Pawnshop Ruby and later, Mary Johnson Rockers and the Spark with Mary's songwriting being noted for "songs that are catchy, well written and eclectic...nearly irresistible" Chris Parker, Indyweek).
As Nantahala, they are joined by percussionist Robert Cantrell (Paperhand Puppet Orchestra, Tim Smith Band, Drowning Lovers), bassist John Gillespie (Drowning Lovers, Nikki Meets the Hibachi), and lead guitarist Ian Leinbaugh (Blindog). They surefootedly deliver an intimate and powerful set- be it from a large festival stage or a campfire circle - that moves listeners to lean in for more.
